for everyone
                                            Jimmy Shand
The late Sir Jimmy Shand (above) was a world famous accordianist.  He was born in Fife in 1908.   He lived in Auchtermuchty for a great many years, and sadly passed away in December 2000.

Worldwide acclaim

He treated people with great courtesy - it didn't matter who you were, a celebrity, a dignitary or a man of the road, you were always welcome.

Sir Jimmy won worldwide acclaim for his musicianship and was also highly praised for his charity work.

Scottish First Minister and fellow Fifer Henry McLeish described him as a "true gentleman" who made an "enormous contribution to preserving Scotland's musical heritage".

There was a statue erected in his memory. (See picture below.)

There are two tracks from him on Best of Scotland Volume 1 and Best of Scotland Volume 3

Auchtermuchtym for some reason it looks foreign. Definitely not Scots. Although with the exception of possibly Ian and myself I doubt anyone else around here would know how to pronounce it. You should hear how they pronounce Glasgow on CNN, Glass Cow. Good knows how they would pronounce Auchtermuchty. I didn't know that Jmmy Shand had been knighted.

I think it is the size of the name, but by coincidence I live in the next village, and have to quote this at times when giving directions, and no one on the other end of the phone can spell it,and that is up here. It is always the "ch"part which troubles everyone. I agree with you regarding the news readers, they have us guessing with their pronounciaton. Brechin is one place and they cannot pronouce that either. Over here in Scotland, we have lots of names of places with a "ch" in them, which has holidaymakers struggle or they just point to the place on the map for safety.
Yes Jimmy Shand was knighted in 1999.

Well....I don't know that much about derivations, but the word "auch" means "also", in German. Are many of the Scottish names derived from German words?

There are a lot of places the names all start with Auch. I have no idea where the names are dervied from . Some of the names I had never heard of until I lived here.
