Christmas in The Dust
======================

I had no Christmas spirit
when I breathed a weary sigh,
And looked across the table
where the bills were piled too high.

The laundry wasn't finished
and the car I had to fix,
My stocks were down another point,
the Dolphins lost by six.

And so with only minutes
till my son got home from school
I gave up on the drudgery
and grabbed a wooden stool.

The burdens that I carried
were about all that I could take,
And so I flipped the TV on
to catch a little break.

I came upon a desert scene
in shades of tan and rust,
No snowflakes hung upon the wind,
just clouds of swirling dust.

And where the reindeer should have stood
before a laden sleigh,
Eight Hummers ran a column
right behind an M1A.

A group of boys walked past the tank,
not one was past his teens.
Their eyes were hard as polished flint,
their faces drawn and lean.

They walked the street in armor
with their rifles shouldered tight,
Their dearest wish for Christmas,
just to have a silent night.

Other soldiers gathered,
hunkered down against the wind,
To share a scrap of mail and dreams
of going home again.

There wasn't much at all
to put their lonely hearts at ease,
They had no Christmas turkey,
just a pack of MREs.

They didn't have a garland
or a stocking I could see,
They didn't need an ornament
they lacked a Christmas Tree.

They didn't have a present
even though it was tradition,
the only boxes I could see
were labeled "ammunition."

I felt a little tug
and found my son now by my side,
He asked me what it was I feared,
and why it was I cried.

I swept him up into my arms
and held him oh so near
and kissed him on the forehead
as I whispered in his ear.

There's nothing wrong my little son,
for safe we sleep tonight,
Our heroes stand on foreign land
to give us all the right,

To worry on the things in life
that mean nothing at all,
Instead of wondering if we
will be the next to fall.

He looked at me as children do
and said it's always right,
to thank the ones who help us
and perhaps that we should write.

And so we pushed aside the bills
and sat to draft a note,
to thank the many far from home,
and this is what we wrote:

God Bless You all and keep you safe,
and speed your way back home.
Remember that we love you so,
and that you're not alone.

The gift you give you share with all,
a present every day,
You give the gift of liberty
and that we can't repay.

Yes you are right. Mary some of these young lads dont even understand why they are there and what they are fighting for. There was a documentary on tv about Scottish regiments...and it was said how the youngsters didnt understand what . It must be awful to have family over there. Do you remember Bush and Blair said that they would all get home in June...how many years ago was that?

Yes Paula I heard that about Bush and Blair saying those words and I heard recently that they will be over there for another 15 years...what a waste of lives...I say bring them all home...NOW!!

I hope that they are not going to have to stay another 15 years. I know for one thing our country cant afford it...and I think it is the same with your country. They could put the money to better use as even after 15 years there will always be fighting. Has anyone ever challenged Bush? I know that families who lost their sons went to the PM calling him a murderer..wonder if there had been anything like this happen in the US.

One lady who had a son die in the war tried to start an anti war protest like the ones from the 60's but she had a lot of problems from the government and quit doing it. The politicians are so busy trying to get elected that they forgot about those they are supposed to represent.

Folks over here stuck together and marched to Downing Street outside the PMs house and boy they told him what they thought of him. I think a wreath was put on the doorstep with the words Murderer on it.
The politiicans are forgetting they are supposed to represent US..and who do they expect to vote for them.???
I wouldnt make a good politician but I would please a lot of folks with my decisions...the first one being Charity begins at home.

Yes yes yes...there has been all kinds of he?? raised about the troops not being sent home and several want to impeach Bush...there has been hundreds marched right on his street in front of the capital ( his white house home ) but for some odd reason he always gets his way...I won't say anymore because I get angry...other than BRING ARE WOMEN AND MEN HOME!!!

I think it is dreadful to promise people before they go that they will be home in June. Wonder what these folks feel, and how disgusted they must be with the government.
I agree, it is time they were home. It just gets one frustrated as we cannot do anything....and all words fall on deaf ears.

Like you I hope they return to their families. They will never stop the fighting regardless of how long they stay there. Do you remember when they first went out they were told they would be home by the June...how many years ago was that. I hope we get better leaders who will remember charity begins at home.
